When was the last time that you apologized and said sorry to your spouse?

Read: Proverbs 16:18

“Pride leads to destruction, and arrogance to downfall.”

Pride is a terrible sin, resulting in terrible consequences. The first couple, our first parents, Adam and Eve, disobeyed God out of pride. The serpent tempted them to eat the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden by telling them that if they did eat, they would be like gods. They forgot God’s warning, they touched, and they ate, and reaped the terrible consequence. They lost paradise and eternal life. They had moved from life to death.

In marriage, pride can come in number of ways. We are proud when we refuse to make a positive move unless our spouse does so first, lest we be dominated or taken advantage of. We are proud when we believe we know it all, refusing to listen seriously to our spouse’s input. We are proud when we stubbornly hold fast to our position during a discussion or disagreement, not wanting to show weakness nor admit that our spouse may be right. We are proud when we do not admit our fault, when we do not want to say we are sorry nor ask for forgiveness. We are proud when we allow differences to drive a wedge between us, rather than talking things through and resolving them in the Lord.

Be properly warned by the wisdom of the ages: “Pride goes before disaster, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
