THE WAY FORWARD IN CHRIST

WITNESSES OF JESUS – 9

Today’s readings:
Acts 4:32-37
Psalm 93:1-5
John 3:7-15
Today the whole world is being overcome by a tsunami of evil. “The flood has raised up, Lord; the flood has raised up its roar; the flood has raised its pounding waves.” (Ps 93:3). The flood is a figure of chaos and rebellion. The flood is raised up as a towering tsunami. The flood is the roaring lion that devours many. The flood keeps pounding the world with wave after wave of evil and abomination. The world today is drowning in this flood.
Our only hope is in God. “More powerful than the roar of many waters, more powerful than the breakers of the sea, powerful in the heavens is the Lord.” (Ps 93:4). How do we tap on to God’s power? We are to be like Him and we are to obey Him. “Your decrees are firmly established; holiness befits your house, Lord, for all the length of days.” (Ps 93:5). We are to grow in holiness, and we are to be obedient to God’s will and ways.
How does this happen? “You must be born from above.” (Jn 3:7b). We must meet Christ anew and be transformed in, by and through him. We must repent of sin and put our faith in Jesus. Then we are to live Christ. We are to live a life in the Spirit. We are to be “born of the Spirit.” (Jn 3:8b). This is how we make it through this valley of tears and ultimately to heaven, as God intends. Thus, “everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” (Jn 3:15).
How does one meet Christ anew? Someone needs to share Christ. This is someone who will witness to Jesus. This is what Jesus commissioned his disciples to be and to do. It started with the apostles. “With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all.” (Acts 4:33).
From there, one becomes a Christian. One is incorporated into the body of Christ. Here all that is need for growing in the Spirit are provided. Aside from spiritual needs, bodily and emotional needs are also addressed. “There was no needy person among them” (Acts 4:34a). As the body of Christ is one, “the community of believers was of one heart and mind” (Acts 4:32a). They grew in the Lord, in their love and care for one another, and in their pursuit of the common mission. They were witnesses of Jesus sent into the world to witness to him.
All this is the only way the world can survive the tsunami of evil, as peoples turn to God and accept Jesus as Savior and Lord. “The Lord is king, robed with majesty; the Lord is robed, girded with might. The world will surely stand in place, never to be moved.” (Ps 93:1).
